Making a Freight Return

Making a Freight return.

We know you want this marble to disappear and we know you want money back in your account.  But for whatever reason this is coming back, we need to be smart in how it is done.

  • We will email you a BOL (Bill of Lading – a shipment cannot go anywhere without one).
  • You will want to make 2 Copies, one for you to sign and give to the driver and one for the driver to sign.
  • The truck will not come until you call them and say, “my shipment is ready to be collected”.  The 800 number is on the BOL.
  • The shipment will be picked up in the same way it was dropped off, so a driver with a truck with a lift-gate and pallet truck.  The shipment will need to be in the same place making pick up easy (it cannot for example be stuck at the end of a 100FT gravel driveway). I know this is an effort but you want the pallet truck to be able to easily collect this crate/pallet.  Do not start packing the pallet/crate until it is in a spot that a fork truck can easily get to.  A smooth flat surface.

Container Ship with Italian Marble Arrives

The MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) Vessel arrived into Savannah on Tuesday

The MSC has so far bought the largest container vessel ever into the port of Savannah holding 9,200 shipping containers.  We were all hoping our containers are not at the bottom.  Fortunately according to sources they are not and as of Wednesday were in the process of clearing customs.

Post office Gold

Royal Mail (British version of USPS) promised before the start of the Olympics that they would paint the postbox in any gold medal winners town gold for the duration of the games.

Unlike the USA the Postman (affectionately called a Postie regardless of gender) does not pick up mail from individual post boxes with flags. They deliver mail through the door letterbox. But outgoing mail is taken to the Red postbox. Now in I believe Gold, in 16 towns. Very cool.

Shipping to Canada

We are often asked this question and we do ship to many Canadian customers.  I would say 90% of them ship to a location in the USA and then bring it over themselves.  For smaller orders 50SF of 2” Hexagon (for example) many select a UPS store in the USA.  We ship there and the customer picks up.

This method works particularly well on Metal items, as they ship for free in the USA.  The customer ships to a UPS store and then picks up their order.  To place the order just enter the shipping location as UPS store (followed by address) and then in the comments add any notes or reference number you would want on the message.

For freight orders (those orders that include field tiles or are larger than 100SF) the majority of Canadian customers use terminals close to the Canadian border.  For example Roadrunner is one carrier.  You could select “pick-up” from terminal and collect from the USA.

For those customers looking to ship direct to ...

HELP! I did not order enough!

The room grew since you measured or the installer measured wrong for whatever reason you do not have enough marble to complete the task.  You need more tile! Yesterday as the installer is here and on site.

If more than 5 days have gone by this is now a challenge as that is how quickly we get through lots.  We could now be on a completely different lot. By lot we mean shade, color, veining and even size of the tile.

The tiles and mosaics come from blocks of stone.  To get the block holes are drilled into the stone on the mountain, water is pumped in at high pressure until “Crack” and the block breaks off.  That block is then moved to be cut and processed.  When we ship your first order we take as much care as possible to look at each product and match them up as close as possible to each lot.  It is a pain staking process.

Lets assume now months have gone by and the block cutting may have moved to the other side of the mountain.  The guy in charge of cutting the field tile may have had to replace the saw blades, not a very accurate job (the ...

Why is the cost of shipping a small tile order so high?

You have probably found yourself here after clicking on a link and you need 10SF of 12×24” or 15SF of 8×16” or 6×12”.  All these larger tiles cannot ship UPS ground.  They will be broken.  UPS throws their shipments and there are drops off conveyor belts that sort the shipments in UPS facilities.  This will result in the tile being broken.  Guaranteed 100%.  Mosaics are okay, they are flexible and on a mesh.

So we have to ship freight (also sometimes called Motor freight) on a pallet.  The wooden pallet supports the product and fork trucks are used to move it.  Shipping 10SF or 20SF will cost the same as shipping 100SF.  The reason for this is because the freight carrier has a minimum order to cover.

From the freight companies side.  The pallet takes up the same space on the truck.  Has to travel the same distance, same paperwork handled and go through the same terminal process.  That minimum is always around $170.00.  From there the shipping rates go up but not in relation to what is ordered.  For example 100SF may cost ...
